What is in our Name?

AINNURRUVAR
Denotes the foremost south Indian merchant guild consortium which was active between the ninth and sixteenth centuries. It stood for value based business and fulfilled the needs for various commodities ranging from mustard to elephant. Its clientele ranged from royalty to the common man on the street. Their trading activities transcended various kingdoms in Southern India. Geographically speaking their activities were seen over an extensive area which comprised South India, Sri Lanka, Burma, Java, Sumatra, Indochina, Cambodia and China. They had their own army to protect their goods in transit and storage and their own ships for maritime trade.

Their activities have been preserved for posterity by more than 300 stone inscriptions found in the above territories. The inscriptions speak of their collective endeavors by tolls on their own merchandise for contribution to fulfil temple building activities and maintenance of temple related activities. Their contributions were not confined to Hindu Saiva and Vaishnavaite temples alone. They also patronised Jain, Buddhist and Moslem religious places.

They undertook social service activities like digging lakes, ponds and wells for meeting water needs. Their treatment of their suppliers, service providers and staff was exemplary and honorable

We are privileged to be one of their successors and subscribe to their fundamental code - Aram maravarka, Aramae thunai - means

"FORGET NOT RIGHTEOUSNESS,
RIGHTEOUSNESS ALONE IS OUR REFUGE"
